Quad Cities Wood Turners Meeting Minutes

President Jerry Sergeant called the meeting to order. 76 members, a quorum, were present along with eight visitors. Five people became new members.

The December meeting minutes were approved on a motion from Denny Hurd and seconded by Gina Swift. Treasurer Lloyd Beckman reported $3,764.39 in the checking account and $474.89 in the pop fund. All bills received have been paid. Lloyd’s report was approved on a motion by Bob Mattison and seconded by Dean Stolz.

Items Discussed

1. Making Boxes Demo: Dave Johnson will be demonstrating making boxes on Saturday, January 23, at the club headquarters. The demo will begin at about 9 am. Lunch will be provided, with donations appreciated.

2. Sarge’s Souper Bowl Saturday: Our annual open shop, soup lunch will be held February 20th, from 9 am until 2or 3 in the afternoon. Several club members will bring soups for lunch.

3. Vase Raffle: The raffle for two vessels by Steve Sinner and Joe Meirhaeghe has currently sold $300 in tickets. The raffle will be held when $500 in tickets are sold. Dave VandenBoom is collecting the money.

4. Beginning Turners Class: A sign-up sheet for persons interested in a beginners turning class was started. The tentative date February 13th. Depending on interest, another class may be scheduled. Art Jackson is coordinating the class.

5. Library: Ron Curtis, club librarian, announced the purchase of 3 new DVD’s and two have already been checked out from the library. Two of the DVD’s are about basic woodturning techniques, one by Jimmy Clewes and one by Keith Rowley. The other is a bowl turning DVD by Dale Stubbs. Ron also asked for suggestions from club members for new library materials as the board has appropriated $300 for the year for the library.

6. 2010 Dues: Members were reminded that Linda Beckman is collecting 2010 dues of $25 per member.

7. Quad Airport Show: Jerry reminded members that the club will be featured in an exhibit at the Quad City Airport in November and December of this year. Now is the time to start working on pieces for the display.

8. Figge Museum Wood Art Show: the current wood art exhibit at the Figge Art Museum will end February 14th. On Saturday, January 30th, the Figge will host a lecture by Charlotte Wainwright titled “Wood: A Medium for the 21st Century”. She is the retired, founding director of the Gregg Museum of Art & Design at North Carolina State University.

9. Crafts Supply Order: Ron Curtis will be coordinating an order from Crafts Supply for club members. Ron will accept orders from now until the March meeting and submit the order then. Crafts Supply offers free shipping and discounts on items with a club orders. The order should be filled and ready to distribute at the April meeting.
